College Student Tutors: Understanding Motivations & Barriers to Drive Effective Engagement

In the 2022-23 school year, Step Up partnered with over 25 colleges, universities, and community colleges to engage their students to serve as tutors as their Work-Study job or fellowship with the Californians for All College Corps program. Based on our learnings from serving as part of a CA for All College Corps fellowship, we published this whitepaper about how to effectively engage college student tutors.

About the whitepaper: The US has over 15 million college students, who represent a promising pool of high impact tutors for K12 students. However, effectively engaging college students as tutors requires a deep understanding of their unique motivations, goals, needs, and barriers. What are they looking for from a tutoring experience and what supports are most helpful in driving their success? This brief shares insights from college student tutors recruited through two sources: Federal Work-Study and CA for All College Corps, a community service scholarship program.
