Tutoring Leadership Program

Step Up Scholars is a tutoring leadership program for selected college students to build skills, serve their community, and explore career pathways.

Step Up Scholars will serve as a tutor and mentor to elementary school students and also receive:

  • Robust training, skill building & support

  • Community building and career exploration opportunities

  • A high-impact tutoring microcredential from Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College

Our inaugural class of Step Up Scholars starts August 2023

Step Up to Close the Gap

As a Step Up Scholar you will:

  • Serve as a one-on-one or small group virtual math tutor for 2-6 students in 3rd-6th grade

  • Work at least 6 and up to 15 hours per week, with schedule options ranging from 8am-3pm Mon-Fri, 1:30pm - 4:30pm Mon-Thurs, and additional hours in the afternoons and evenings

  • Build critical skills for career success, training through Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and the opportunity to earn a microcredential at no cost to you (coming in spring ‘24)

  • Be paired with a tutoring coach who will provide regular observations and feedback

  • Participate in community building activities with other scholars in your cohort

  • Receive career development opportunities including internship and career exploration opportunities in conjunction with Step Up Tutoring corporate & community partners

The Step Up Scholars program is made possible with the support of our partners

Eligibility and Requirements

Step Up Scholars must be available to work for at least 6 hours and up to 15 hours per week (number of hours depend on each Scholar’s need) over at least one semester and up to a full academic year (fall + spring semesters)

  • 4-10 hours working directly with students

  • 1-3 hours preparing for sessions

  • 1-2 hours of training, professional learning, and community building

All fellows must be one of the following:

  • Accepted to the 2023-2024 Californians for All College Corps program and committed to serving 8-15 hours a week

  • Federal Work Study student with 6 or more hours/week or $1,410 available in funding per semester

Note: additional hours commitment for professional learning and community building opportunities will be considered volunteer hours and will not be eligible for hourly pay for Federal Work Study students

Application Instructions

  2. Schedule a live interview session (after submitting form) - 20 minutes

  3. Complete a Livescan background check (cost reimbursed upon request)
